English Language Learners
English Language Learners palos118.org/boardpolicy
District 118 provides language support services for pre-kindergarten (pre-k) through 8th grade students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who have been identified as English Language Learners (ELL). During registration, if a language other than English is identified by parents on the Home Language Survey, a student is screened to assess their English proficiency. The student is assessed through content areas in the four language domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. If the screener determines a student to be Limited English Proficient, that student qualifies for District 118’s ELL program. Services are provided within the school day that will assist ELL students in meeting the same challenging state performance standards expected of all children and in becoming lifelong learners.
