This is a project done in my infolit class. I chose
to do a project about Carl Sandburg.
Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1878. He was a poet who wrote many famous poems. He also wrote books that had poetry in them. While he worked his way through school, he had the time to write his first volume of poetry. It was called Reckless Ecstasy (1904). During his four years at Lombard College, he was encouraged by his professor to keep writing. If you're wondering what the professor's name is, it's Philip Green Wright. When he had finished college, he moved to Milwaukee to work as an advertising writer and a newspaper reporter. When he was there he met and married a lady named Lillian Steichen. After he had married Lillian, he worked for the Social-Democrat party that was in Wisconsin. He acted as secretary for the first Socialist mayor of Milwaukee from 1910-1912. |
| They soon moved to Chicago. This is where Carl had found work as an editorial writer for the Chicago Daily News. He had some of his poetry entered in a magazine that was called Poetry: A Magazine of Verse. It was Harriet Monroe that kept encouraging him to continue writing. He was soon seen as a member of the Chicago literary renaissance. He was soon known for the free-verse that he wrote and how he described things in his poems. |
| He began to study Abraham Lincoln. He continued to write poetry through his life. He died in 1967. |
