                               Olde English Language

The English language was spoken by three main Germanic tribes, the Anglos, Saxons, and Jutes. Olde English was based on West Germanic. The four main variants are Mercian, Northumbrian, spoken by the Anglos. Kentish which was spoken by the Jutes, and West Saxon spoken by the Saxons.

Mercian and West Saxons were used on poems and literature, an example of this is Beowulf. Old English had masculine nouns, feminine nouns, and neutral. Much like we have today. The period in which we had Old English is thought to be during circa 600-1100 ad. Before that we had Latin, and around
140 Latin were added to the Old English language such as, alter,

Around 40 Scandinavian words were added to the Olde English Language. As the Scandinavians continued to conquer they added words to the Olde English launguage. The Old English language is many words, from different languages put together.

Why do you think they took words from the Latin language?
How do you think they got all those mixtures of words?
Why do you think it was called Mercian, Kentish, Northumbrian, and West Saxon?
