Medieval Ship

The different groups of people all had different ships.  For example, medieval Europe  had some of their own vessels.  The Vikings also had longboats and Viking canoes.  The ships of medieval Europe were developments of the Roman galley.  The difference was that the Europeans used much longer oars, or sweeps, that could be as long as 15 m (50 ft).  There were usually seven rowers at each oar.  To provide more leverage for the oars, the tholes, against which the oars were pulled, were located on the outside of the hull on the the which was on a wooden framework.  Instead of steering oars used by the Roman, these ships had a permanent rudder hung from the sternpost of the ship.  Viking longships and Viking canoes  had some differences from Medieval European ships.  The longships had one sail, and they were propelled by 18 foot oars.  The canoes were approximately 400 cm in length, and they were approximately 100 cm in width.
