Do you like to read books about good and happy times or sad and miserable times, like hurricanes, deadly leaches, houses falling off cliffs, and an allergy to peppermints!!! Well if you like to read books about sad and miserable times, then you should read The Wide Window by Lemony Snicket. This book takes place on and around Lake Lachrymose and in Aunt Josephine’s house which hangs by a thread right over Lake Lachrymose. It is about to fall right in the lake. The Wide Window is in present time. The five main characters in this book are Violet, Klaus, Sunny, Aunt Josephine, and Count Olaf. Violet is very smart. She is an inventor, and she knows how to work a sailboat without ever being in one. Klaus is also very smart. He can decode codes. He decoded the letter that Aunt Josephine left so that he would know where she was hiding. He wears glasses and always wears his fancy coat. Sunny is also pretty smart for a two year old. He has teeth of steel that can bite right through a piece of metal. Aunt Josephine is scared of EVERYTHING!!! Like hot cucumber soup, glass doorknobs, realtors, the stove, and a whole lot more. Finally, Count Olaf is the villain in this story. He wants to steel the Baudelaire fortune. He has a tattoo of an eye on his leg. The problem is that Count Olaf wants to kill Aunt Josephine and become the parent of the orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Then he will take their fortune. Besides that there are many other problems in the story like Hurricane Herman, sailing in the hurricane with thousands of leeches ready to eat them, ramming the boat. It is all Aunt Josephine’s fault since she had ate a banana a little while ago and the leeches smelt her so they were trying to eat her. I think the theme of this book is that you should stand up to your fears. I
really like the book because it was very exciting. I would rate the book
5 out of 5. I think the author explained things very well, like how when
sunny talked in baby talk she said what he meant. I would definitely recommend
this book.
