Shadowmaker

The lights flickered and disappeared.  The living room was jet black.  Katie picked up the phone.  It was dead!  The dogs were barking simultaneously.  Three gunshots and there was an eerie silence.  Whoever was out there was after her!  I read the book Shadowmaker   by Joan Lowery Nixon.  What you just read was part of a chapter that really made me want to read on.

The novel is set in Kluney, Texas.  It is set in present day, in the middle of the school year.  Kluney is a very small town.  There's only one major business, and everyone knows about everything and everybody.  Turbulent can also describe Kluney.  So much happens like burglaries, murders, and some talk of a toxic waste landfill under some houses.  Mysterious, very mysterious.  In Kluney there is strange sheriff and nasty letters telling the Gillians to go away.  Katie really doesn't belong in Kluney, she doesn't like it either.  She would rather be in Huston any day.

Katie is a normal teenager with strawberry blonde hair.  She can be responsible, mature, and brave all rolled into one.  Would you stay home alone on a chilly, foggy night like Katie?  Katie also took matters into her own hands when Lana Jean was murdered.  She even thought of climbing into the attic when the murderer was after her.  “Nice” is a great description of Katie.  She didn't decline the big muscular football player Billy Don who asked her to the dance.  Katie got Lana Jean cleaned up and gave her new clothes for the carnival.  Katie also gave a visit to poor Anita Boggs when she got beat up by her husband.  Katie is her name and keeping secrets is her game.  Katie never told her mom about her love for ballet.  Katie even secretly took some of Anita's contaminated soil for testing. She also never told Travis that she had Lana Jean's journal.

Katie has been struggling against B.J., who just wants Katie to "scram!"  Katie trys to figure out what B.J.'s up to, but ends up finding out something she didn't want to know.  Some intense actions that happen in the book are: A carnival worker is murdered , Lana Jean is murdered, and people are throwing rocks and loitering around Katie's house at night.  I think the theme of the novel has something to do with following your heart or instinct and it will  lead you to the correct path or answer. Katie really doesn't learn anything from this struggle , she just does it and just knows what to do. Katie is a gifted girl.

Overall, I liked the book a lot.  The author describes the facial features of the characters really well.  I have never read any other novel like this.  I am glad this one is my first.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good teen murder mystery. Who dun it ?  Who killed Lana Jean? It was ....., no I can't tell you! You will just have to read to find out!
