A detective, a legend, a killer, a doctor, and no witnesses!!! Will the
killer kill again? Who is the killer? These are questions that Detective
Sherlock Holmes can and must answer in this thrilling tale of
The Hound of the Baskervilles
by Arthur Conan Doyle.
This different tale takes place in the past, probably around the late 1800's early 1900's. The main setting, the moor, was very frightening mainly because Sir Henry Baskerville died there, but also because there is supposed to be a wild, vicious, dog, from the legend, on the loose. Another, thing is the fact that the Baskerville mansion is old. There are cracks all over, and the gate is inoperable. The surroundings have plants growing wildly. No one has taken care of the plants in years. The moor is very very calm. There is almost no activity, except when Sir Henry Baskerville used to go to the moor for his midnight walk. The main character is another important factor of the book. The main character, Sherlock Holmes, is a tall and white colored man. He usually wears plaid clothes, and he has thick, light brown colored eyebrows. His face looks soft, and he has a semi-large nose. His lips are almost fire engine red, and his ears are half-way decent. He also has thick brown hair. I know this from the details of the book. The most important "item" from the book is the conflict and the theme. The most important thing Sherlock Holmes must find out is who is the killer, and where is the evidence? This is very difficult because everyone keeps pestering him about the legend. The suspense keeps building when Dr. Mortimer keeps visiting and when Sir Charles Baskerville comes from a distant place. Holmes learns that you can't believe everything you hear or everything that is written down. I thought the book was O.K. I stress O.K. greatly. I thought the book could have used some more imagery, transitions, and better word choices because the book was dull and had harder words. I recommend this book to sixth graders and older who enjoy Sherlock Holmes books or like Arthur Conan Doyle. If you meet my recommendations, then go read the book, NOW!!! |
