How is the ALPS program at South different from ALPS in the primary buildings?

At East and West, ALPS is an enrichment program in which students with particular aptitudes and interests are pulled out of their regular classes on a rotating basis to participate in specifically themed units such as oceanography.  Students still participate in their other classes and are responsible for any material covered during their absences.  Here, students who are academically talented in both reading and language arts have an accelerated language arts block instead of a regular language arts block.

How was my child selected?

We use a matrix which assigns weighted point values for each child’s cognitive ability, reading and language results on the Iowa tests, and teacher recommendations to select the students for this program.  Parents are notified if a child qualifies and they decide whether or not their child should be included.

What about grades?

Grades are determined by dividing the number of points a child earns during a grading period by the number of points available.  This yields a percentage.  The letter grades follow the building’s grading scale:

90 -- 100 = A

80 -- 89 = B

70 -- 79 = C

60 -- 69 =D

Below 60 = F.

Do you accept late work?

I do accept late work because it is important to me that the students complete the course requirements.  However, a substantial penalty will be assessed on the grade of any late assignment.

What supplies does my child need?

For the most part, my students need basic school supplies – dark blue or black ink pens, plenty of loose leaf paper, a folder, some index cards, a pencil, a red pen, and two notebooks/notebook sections.  During the year we will also complete several projects which may call for more advanced art supplies, costuming, or odd bits of paraphernalia.
