The Palos 118
Educational Foundation has awarded airline
tickets, a watch, and several other prizes to
supporters of the school district who bought
tickets not to attend the 2007 Phantom
Ball, a fund-raising non-event sponsored by the
Foundation as part of its on-going efforts to
equip the new Applied Technology Lab at Palos
South Middle School.
Using donated
prizes, the Foundation invited community
residents to buy tickets to the Phantom Ball and
gain entry to the drawing. Unlike more
traditional fund-raising galas, this non-ball
had almost no expenses and all of the money
received for tickets will go into the fund set
aside for helping District 118 get the latest
software and equipment for the Palos South
Applied Technology lab.
Two roundtrip
tickets on Southwest Airlines were donated by
the airline and won by Joy and Craig Adams of
Palos Park. Larisa Markewych, also of Palos
Park, won a Swarovski crystal watch donated by
Lori & Co. Jewelers in Palos Hills. [The

Ten one-year
subscriptions to Morningstar Fundtracker,
donated by Morningstar, Inc., also were awarded
during the Phantom Ball drawing at the
Foundation’s May meeting. They went to Kathleen
Connelly, Sandy and Jamie Corso, Jim and Drina
Madden, Dawn and Timothy McFarland, Mr. and Mrs.
Vincent Sosnicki, Maureen Romero, Catherine
Start, Dave and Marybeth Doubek, J. Koliopoulos,
and Gregory and Kathryn Cargill.
In a separate
fund-raising event, the Foundation raffled off
four extra tickets to the Palos South eighth
grade graduation. Those tickets, donated by
District 118 School Superintendent Joseph Dubec,
went to the Toth family and the Corbet family.
The Palos 118
Educational Foundation -- an all-volunteer
organization dedicated to supporting excellence
in our elementary and middle schools – was
created nine years ago. It has partnered with
businesses, legislature and individuals to
revamp and improve the Palos South Media Center,
replace outdated playground equipment at both
Palos East and West, and equip new science labs
at all three schools. In addition, the
Foundation sponsors the annual Laps for
Literature, a self-sustaining program to
purchase books for the media centers.
