OUR TOWN'S SHOPS

Welcome to the shops page!  On this page you will encounter four of the most popular shops in Palos Township.  They are Plush Horse, Ben Franklin, Sid’s Greenery, and Golden Shoes.  Besides being popular, they are some of the oldest shops in Palos Township.

Plush Horse

Have you ever been to Plush Horse?  It’s the best ice cream parlor in Chicagoland.  If you have been there what is your favorite flavor?  The three most popular flavors are vanilla, chocolate chip, and butter pecan.   Plush Horse is still selling the original 15 flavors, but now they have 43. Some of our favorites are Peppermint Stix, Butterfinger, and Eggnog.  You can also buy coffee, muffins, hot chocolate, and ice cream to bring home.  Each year they get more costumers than the last year.
Plush Horse was built over 100 years ago, but it didn’t become a store until 1937.  Before it was a store, the Justice of the Peace had an office there.  It was a place where people got married.  The current owner, Sheri, has been the owner for 14 years.  The first owners were the Hames.  The next owners were the Steansons.  There is a store above it called Nouveau Silks.
They have always advertised in the newspaper, but everyone in Palos tells newcomers to go there for the best ice cream anywhere.  Inside there is a huge, stuffed, white horse.  On the outside there are tables, chairs, and benches.  The outside has always looked the same, but the inside counter has changed and the shop has had different setups.  There is no plan to change how it looks.

Ben Franklin

Ben Franklin is located on Harlem Ave. next to the fire station.  They have a very good business.  Ben Franklin has many selections.  They sell candy, crafts, school supplies, decorations, toys and many other things. They are open seven days a week; however they are closed on Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July. They have been open since the 1960’s and they've had about the same amount of business all these years. Ben Franklin is advertised by word of mouth and the newspaper. They also have a web site: www.benfranklin.com.  Their business is a family business. The family that owns the business is the Tureks. The manager’s name is Dave Turek. The families that owned Ben Franklin before the Tureks were the Grills and the Poes. All that has changed over the years are the selections and they even added the craft shop. The craft shop addition used to be Cinderella’s Dress Shop. Can you believe all these years the business hasn’t been computerized?

Sid's Greenery

Have you ever been to Sid’s Greenery?  Sid's is located on 111th and South West Highway.  A little earlier than 1960 Sid’s was known as the Dutch Farm Stand.  The cart was wheeled in and out of a garage, by Sid the owner of the cart.  When it was a cart Sid got the vegetables from the Chicago Produce Society.   Everyday he sold fruits and vegetables.  During the late 1960’s Sid started growing mums.
After Sid died, his wife and two sons took over the business.  They named the store after him and built a greenhouse.  Soon after, they started having other items in stock instead of just flowers.  Also, in their store they have pet birds and fish.  The type of birds are, cockatiels, parrots, parakeets, and the fish that they have are Okax.  The busiest season is spring and the Saturday before Mother’s day is the busiest day.   Some items are grills, plants, and trees. Ever since then, the store has grown over the years.

Golden Shoes

Owners of Golden Shoes-Irv and Marc Goldberg

Long-term sales associates

In 1963 a  shoe store named Golden Shoes opened in Palos Heights.  It wasn't always a shoe store.  It was a funeral home at one time and a car rally store.  It is a family store owned by a father named Irv who gave the store to his son Marc in 1980.  Marc’s brother has worked there, but does not anymore.  They always carried shoes for the entire family.    They sell about 60 pairs during the week and about 80 pairs on a Saturday.  The average price of adult shoes in 1963 was about $20; it cost $5 for a childrens pair.  The most expensive pair for adults today costs $249.95 and for children it's $84.95.
They sell gym shoes the most.  They carry over 100 different styles of gym shoes.  In 1963 they carried the official scout shoe, Lazy Bones, American Girl and Freeman.  Irv opened the first store in 1948 when all the customers started to move out here to the suburbs from the city. They have ten workers.  One worker has been there for 24 years.  All the same customers are very loyal.  They come back with their kids and sometimes even their grandkids.  They offer great customer service, and they can find any shoe  asked for.  They even trade shoes with other shoe stores.  The largest size they carry is a size 12 in women and a size 19 in men.
