| Welcome to the shops page! On this page you will encounter four of the most popular shops in Palos Township. They are Plush Horse, Ben Franklin, Sid’s Greenery, and Golden Shoes. Besides being popular, they are some of the oldest shops in Palos Township. |
Have you ever been
to Plush Horse? It’s the best ice cream parlor in Chicagoland.
If you have been there what is your favorite flavor? The three most
popular flavors are vanilla, chocolate chip, and butter pecan.
Plush Horse is still selling the original 15 flavors, but now they have
43. Some of our favorites are Peppermint Stix, Butterfinger, and Eggnog.
You can also buy coffee, muffins, hot chocolate, and ice cream to bring
home. Each year they get more costumers than the last year.

Ben Franklin is located on Harlem Ave. next to the fire station. They have a very good business. Ben Franklin has many selections. They sell candy, crafts, school supplies, decorations, toys and many other things. They are open seven days a week; however they are closed on Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July. They have been open since the 1960’s and they've had about the same amount of business all these years. Ben Franklin is advertised by word of mouth and the newspaper. They also have a web site: www.benfranklin.com. Their business is a family business. The family that owns the business is the Tureks. The manager’s name is Dave Turek. The families that owned Ben Franklin before the Tureks were the Grills and the Poes. All that has changed over the years are the selections and they even added the craft shop. The craft shop addition used to be Cinderella’s Dress Shop. Can you believe all these years the business hasn’t been computerized? By: Adam |
Have you ever
been to Sid’s Greenery? Sid's is located on 111th and South West
Highway. A little earlier than 1960 Sid’s was known as the Dutch
Farm Stand. The cart was wheeled in and out of a garage, by Sid the
owner of the cart. When it was a cart Sid got the vegetables from
the Chicago Produce Society. Everyday he sold fruits and vegetables.
During the late 1960’s Sid started growing mums.

In 1963 a shoe store named
Golden Shoes opened in Palos Heights. It wasn't always a shoe store.
It was a funeral home at one time and a car rally store. It is a
family store owned by a father named Irv who gave the store to his son
Marc in 1980. Marc’s brother has worked there, but does not anymore.
They always carried shoes for the entire family. They
sell about 60 pairs during the week and about 80 pairs on a Saturday.
The average price of adult shoes in 1963 was about $20; it cost $5 for
a childrens pair. The most expensive pair for adults today costs
$249.95 and for children it's $84.95.
