Have you just moved here and you don't know anything about Palos Township? Well, this whole page is about Palos Recreation.   If you like to play sports,   Palos has a variety  from which to choose.   There are baseball fields in Palos Heights.   There is a public pool called  Palos Pool.    There are  bike trails to get exercise or just to enjoy a nice bike ride.    Finally, there are several community parks.    The parks have tennis courts,  playgrounds,  and picnic tables for anyone to use.

THE BIKE TRAILS

Don’t you think it is difficult to maneuver your bike in the gravel of the busy streets? Well, that is what the bike trails help you to avoid.   Do you wonder how they started, what some of the rules are, and some interesting facts?  Well,  hold on to your bike seats and prepare for a wild ride.   Here we go!
First stop,  the beginning of the bike trails.  It all started in 1998.  The chief naturalist of Lake Katherine, Bill Banks,  decided to make bike trails for the busy and dangerous streets of Palos Township.  The State of Illinois agreed to pay half of the construction costs that were needed to build the bike trails.  Some residents liked the trails and some did not. Soon, the bike trails became very popular.
The rules of the bike trails.  You should follow them not only for your own safety, but also for others.  Follsow these rules and you and your bike will be happy.
1.   Ride single file keeping to the right of the trail.
2.   Stay in your own lane.
3.   Give warning before passing other trail users.
4.   Obey all stop signs.
5.   The trail is designed for a moderate recreational speed of 8 mph.
6.   No speed training or racing permitted.
A speed radar is used and a ticket will be given if caught.

Now is the time you’ve all been waiting for.  The exciting, magnificent, interesting facts are here.  Let’s get our wheels rolling!  Have you ever seen the yellow pole right in the middle of the bike trail?  That is for keeping cars and other large vehicles off the trails.  Did you know they are going to continue the dead ends on the bike trails?  When they were first starting the trails they had archaeologists check the land for any historical artifacts.  Archeologists had to take soil samples of the land to see if it was stable.  They did not find any important Indian artifacts.  The entire cost of the bike trails was about $125,000.00.  Wasn’t that interesting?
Put on your brakes, it’s the end of the ride.  We’ve seen how it all started, the rules and interesting facts.  See yah!

The Palos Pool

The Palos Pool opened in 1975.  There is a water slide and also for the older kids there is a high dive and a low dive.  My ultimate favorite is the water slide.  Now how about those rules? No food is allowed out of the food area,  and also during adult swim kids ages 5-17 are not allowed to go on the diving board.   Also,  on rainy days,  if there is lightninig or thunder the pool  will be closed.  Hope you have fun at  Palos Pool!

The Baseball Fields

The History of the Palos Heights Baseball Fields

The baseball fields are found at Route 83 and 76th Ave.  There are six fields there.  They are having problems with the new police parking lot by the north field.  Kids are hitting homeruns and breaking expensive equipment.  The Palos Baseball Association belongs to a member of pony Baseball age groups.  The Public Works department takes care of some of the land, but the majority of the work is done by the Palos Baseball Association.  There are tournaments held all the time.
The fields are approximately 28 years old.  The fields were opened in the early 1970’s.  There was nothing there on the property, but it was owned by NI Gas.  It was going to be used as a corporate headquarters for NI Gas, but the city hall bought the land and built the fields instead.  The night lights were bought so the men’s Softball League can play at night.  The league ran until 1994.  Then the baseball association took it over and it became the men’s and women’s and co-ed softball leagues.
The original baseball field owned by Palos Heights was on Harlem Ave.  where Palos Bank and Trust is now.  When someone hit a homerun it would be a safety hazard hitting the ball into traffic.  In the early 70’s they left the location and went to Community Park.  They put the fields at Community Park because a lot of kids wanted to play baseball and they needed to expand the number of fields they had.  The only open area in town was that land so they created a deal to build baseball fields.  Three of the fields are owned by Commonwealth Edison.  The recreation department borrowed the property to start a league.  The power lines were there when they built the fields.
PBO charges $125.00 to join plus fees.  The fields get between 700 to 800 kids a year.  The PBO puts the money that they receive into improving and maintaining the fields.

Community Parks

The community parks were set up around 1974.  There are 6 parks including Lake Katherine.  They added a park called Westgate Valley in the year 2000.  The building and grounds department maintains the community parks.  The amount of people that  visit Lake Katherine is about 105,000 a year.  It has been a long time since the community parks were set up.  The oldest community park is Palmer Park.  The youngest community park is Westgate Valley.  There activites during the summer. Some parks have tennis courts, basketball courts, playground equipment, sand boxes, and soccer fields.  Hope you have fun using them!
