Welcome to the unofficial Landmarks web page!  Here, you can learn about The Center, The Wayside Chapel,  Sharpshooters Park, and Cap Sauers Holding.  So, let's get started!

Cap Sauers Holding
This is Cap Saures Holding. It is located on 123rd Street between 104th Ave. and Wolf Rd.

In 1972, a place called Cap Sauer’s Holding was built in Cook County. It’s called "Holding" because the land is held for future generations.  Before Cap Sauer’s Holding was there, it was Oak Woodlands and hunting grounds for Indians.  Today, Cap Sauer’s Holding is 72 years old. The reason why the land is so flat is because one of the largest parcels (glacier) was here.  The parcel (glacier) was here 12,000 years ago.  There were some places there before Cap Sauer’s Holding. They had farms in the 1890's.  Civilian conservation corps camp in the 1950’s.  In the 1930’s there was a boys camp and now its a nature preserve with 1,500 acres of land.  There was another name for Cap Sauer’s Holding. The other name is part of Palos. Palos in Spanish means other Hills.  You can never build houses on the land.  You can never make new trails.  Everything there is protected.  The first Sunday of each month people volunteer to clean up the nature preserve.

The Wayside Chapel
This is the Wayside Chapel where many people go to worship or get married.

The Wayside chapel is an interesting landmark of Palos Park.  The chapel was designed by James Pomeroy and was dedicated by Paul T. Sanders in the fall of 1950.  The pyramid shape of the chapel was designed so that men and women of all faiths could accept it.  There was no particular reason that they built The Wayside Chapel; basically they just thought that Palos Park needed it.  People choose this chapel because they can go to their own church and attend some of the chapel's services.   Or, if you are in between churches, you can come to The Wayside Chapel.  It's busiest times of the year are, Easter and the Advent season.  The chapel holds about 100 marriage ceremonies a year.  It can seat 72 of your guests.  It has a garden patio where ceremonies can take place.  The chapel is in the middle of a group of large, beautiful, oak trees.  The Wayside Chapel is located on a hilltop, in the woods of Palos Park, adjacent to The Center.  The chapel is used mostly for weddings, although it has a bible camp in the summer for kids.  The Wayside Chapel is a small, but unique part of Palos Park.

The Center

This is The Center, owned by Paul T. Sanders.

wh

Have you ever wanted something so badly and just gave up?  There was a man who wanted The Center and received it because he never gave up.  Reverend Paul T. Sanders wanted what he called the "house on the side of the road", before he became a minister.  Paul wanted The Center for the beautiful land.  Plus all of his friends lived near.  They built it in 1932.  They added on in 1942.  Paul added once more in 1952 to finish the Center.  The Community Center Foundation had a lot of land.  The Center had 45 acres of farmland, 15 acres of woods and a lodge filled with books.  This was before the First World War.  Paul died in 1982.  His sons now own the Center.  It is filled with people who care.  Unlike before the Center has78 acres of woods and open farmland.  The Center has many different activities going on during the seasons.  For example, they do craft classes and camps.  It has helpful people who talk  children who have experienced death.  The Center has always cared about it's community.  Also, the people in it.

Sharpshooter's Park

This is Sharpshooter's Park. It is located on an island in the middle of the road.

Sharpshooters Park was a place where Union Soldiers went to get taught how to shoot for the Civil War.  It later became the rendezvous of rifle clubs and was known as Sharpshooters Park.  This place was very important because if the soldiers didn't know how to shoot lots of soldiers would die.  It lies on an island in the middle of the street.  It is located near Cherokee and Seminole Road. It’s been there for a long time.  The people who helped me out with this was the Historical Society. On the rock it says: "This monument marks the site of a famous Civil War camp where soldiers were taught to shoot.  Later these grounds became the rendezvous of rifle clubs and is known as Sharpshooter's Park."
