TO THE READING RESOURCE ROOM

The Reading Resource Team consists of two reading resource teachers and three instructional reading aides.  Mrs. Wic is the emergent reading teacher, and Mrs. Wysocki is the reading resource teacher.   Mrs. Brasewicz, Mrs. Belmonte, and Mrs. Gennaro are instructional reading aides.

READING WILL TAKE YOU ANYWHERE!

The Reading Resource Program provides reading services to students, teachers and parents.  Services are rendered to students in grades K-5 who exhibit reading difficulties.  The goal of our program is to help students acquire effective reading strategies that will enable them to become lifelong readers while enjoying the love of reading. Students receive instruction in a variety of ways: individual, small group and whole class.

In addition to helping students, the Reading Resource Team provides resources for teachers.  Language Arts Share meetings are held periodically where ideas, strategies and activities are shared among teachers.  Every month, teachers are provided with educational articles for their professional growth.  The Reading Resource Room contains many professional books and materials that are available to teachers.  Also, the Reading Resource Teachers meet with parents to discuss and provide additional reading strategies for at home support.

READING INCENTIVE

Palos East is continuing its reading incentive program Plant a Seed and Read!  Watch Your Palos Pride Grow!  As always, students are encouraged to read every day after school and log their minutes and books read.  As in the past, reading logs are turned in monthly, and all students turning in their reading logs for the month will receive a bookmark and a Character Coupon.  One student per class per month will receive a credit for the Palos East book fair during the months of September through January.  For the months of February through May, Borders gift cards will be awarded to one student per class.  Classes who have 100% turn-in for at least one month (September to April) will earn the privilege of planting flowers on the school grounds in May.  Additionally, there will be an ice cream party at the end of the school year for all students who turned in their reading logs every month for the whole year.

Another way to promote reading at Palos East is our Reading to the Principal program.  Teachers will select students, as a special privilege, to read to Mrs. Creevy and Mrs. Mrozek.  Those students then will sign a special poster that hangs in the front office.  Our Rocking Chair Reading program is also part of our reading incentive program.  Community members who read will autograph a special bookmark for each student.  Hopefully all of these incentives will foster a love and enjoyment of reading and will lead our students to become life-long readers!
