to Mrs. Nowak's Fourth Grade Classroom!

Fourth grade is an exciting year!  It is a year filled with tremendous intellectual growth! Teaching fourth grade is a rewarding experience.  The children's laughter, smiles and sense of accomplishment is apparent every day!  My children would like to share their classroom happenings and learning experiences. Our classroom is unique!  We are a looping class.  This means that we were together in third grade and now in fourth!

READING LOGS
Each night silent reading homework is assigned.  Twenty minutes of reading is required. Please fill out the reading log form and return it at the end of the month.  Students are responsible for turning in their own logs.  This will also count as a homework grade.

FRIDAY FOLDER

At the end of each week your child’s work will be sent home in the Purple Friday Folder.  I will also include any important notes that need to be sent that week.

Book Reports

The children will explore different genres and have book projects throughout the year.  The project and requirements will be sent home.  The children are expected to work on these at home. This is a great way for children to be exposed to a variety of books and to continue to read for a purpose as well as enjoyment!

Homework

Homework in fourth grade has three purposes.  One is to instill and develop a sense of responsibility in completing and returning assignments.  Second is to allow ample time to complete assignments that were given in class. Third is to provide an opportunity to enrich and practice the skills or concepts that were introduced during class.  Your child will be given forty minutes of homework every night with no homework over the weekend.  This is 10 min per grade level.  They are still required to do their reading log reading each night as well.  If your child does not have their homework completed they will receive a late slip to let you know what they were missing.  One way to alleviate any homework concerns is to check your child’s assignment notebook every night and pack the backpack with completed homework the night before.

Snack

Included in our morning schedule will be a brief snack period.  A healthy snack is suggested such as fruit, cheese and crackers, pretzels, veggies, or yogurt.  Birthday treats are welcome and appreciated for the class to enjoy. If your child celebrates a summer birthday, feel free to send in a birthday treat on his/her ½ birthday.

  Classroom Rules

Be Honest

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

I have instituted a behavior policy to create a classroom climate which enables all children to learn.  Each month, your child will receive a new behavior card which starts at 100%.  When your child chooses to break a rule, they will receive a verbal warning.  After that warning, if the behavior doesn't change, he/she will receive an "x" on their behavior card.  This "x" will equal 2 points off his/her card.  At the end of the month your child will earn a behavior grade based on the direct grading scale.  After reviewing the behavior card, please sign and return it to school.
