A Special Note About Math…
It is expected that all fourth graders have mastered their multiplication facts from 0 through 12. During the fourth grade year, the students are also expected to master their division facts.
In order to experience success when tackling multiplication and division problems, which constitutes a significant portion of our fourth grade math curriculum, students need to have an automatic recall of these facts. The basic facts are reinforced in school through assignments, activities, and games. However, we need your help at home. We cannot stress enough the importance of practicing these facts as often as possible at home, and making the learning of the basic facts an academic priority.
In fourth grade, students are expected to problem solve and give a rationale for their solutions. The students learn the four-step process for solving problems. In addition, we are working on various problem solving strategies, such as working backwards, making a model, guess and check, using a table and estimating.
