Language
Arts
Language Arts is comprised
of the following disciplines:
Reading
The instructional focus of the Harcourt
Trophies Reading Series progresses from "learning to read" to "reading to learn"
and the ultimate goal of "learning for life." The reading series is
composed of a variety of classic and contemporary works, including realistic
fiction, folktales, mysteries, non-fiction, plays and poetry.
Writing
Fourth graders are continuing
to write expository, persuasive and narrative essays.
Writing Mechanics
Students will further develop
their skills in grammar, punctuation, capitalization
and word usage. Students will
develop and practice cursive penmanship through daily writing activities.
Spelling
Students are given direct
skill instruction in spelling patterns and rules. The students are
expected to master the fourth grade core words and demonstrate this in
their daily written work. Spelling is also incorporated into the Harcourt
Trophies Reading series.
Speaking
Through the use of oral presentations
and monthly book projects, students will develop speaking skills. They
will focus on maintaining eye contact, articulation, and expression.
Listening
Listening skills are a vital
part of everyday life. Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate
listening skills.
Technology
Fourth grade students are
expected to master keyboarding skills and be able to do basic word processing.
They are also learning to cite references from computer software and Internet
sources.
Our goal is to develop these skills so they can be integrated throughout the curriculum.
