Classroom Policies & Procedures

Classroom Expectations

Our classroom has discussed and developed expectations that students have agreed to uphold at school. These expectations are posted in the classroom as a constant reminder of the expected respect of learning and safety of others.

 I feel that a positive relationship between parents, teachers, and students will make for a successful learning environment. As a class, we have agreed to uphold our responsibilities so that our classroom will be a safe, secure and fair learning environment.  These are the procedures of our classroom.  These procedures are in effect at ALL times:

Classroom Rules

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

Be Honest

 Always BE PREPARED FOR CLASS with supplies, homework, assignments, and textbooks.

I have instituted a behavior policy to create a classroom climate which enables all children to learn.  Each month, your child will receive a new behavior card which starts at 100 percent.  When your child chooses to break a rule, they will receive a verbal warning.  After the warning, if the behavior doesn’t change, he/she will receive an “X” on their behavior card.  This “X” will equal 2 points off his/her card.  At the end of the month, your child will earn a behavior grade based on the direct grading scale and the number of points earned.  After reviewing the behavior card, please sign and return it to school.

Homework

My expectation is that homework is completed independently with parental guidance.  Homework is intended to give children an opportunity to practice new skills learned as well as provide feedback regarding student understanding of concepts.  The school board policy for 4th grade is approximately 50-60 minutes of homework a night. If a student does not bring in a homework assignment, they will write a note home informing parents of the missing assignment. The note must be signed and returned to school the next day along with the late assignment.

“Fishing For Compliments”

Each day the class has the opportunity to earn “Compliment Fish” for the classroom fish bowl.  The purpose of this fish bowl is to reward the entire class for good behavior, remembering to bring things back to school, compliments earned as a group for good behavior, etc.  When the class reaches the goal of earning twenty “Compliment Fish” they will receive a special reward.  I look forward to many rewards.

Managing My Own Success Journal

We will be celebrating our own personal successes.  At the end of each quarter, students will bring home a copy of their monthly success sheets.  Students will be recording their successes in a classroom journal.  These successes will be shared at our classroom meetings.

*

*    Friday  Mailboxes

*    Every Friday, your child will be coming home with completed work from the week. Please look over the contents of this “mail” including assignments that may need corrections. I will also include any important notes that need to be sent home that week.

Reading Logs

A monthly reading log will be sent home in Friday Folders at the beginning of each month.  Please initial the log for each night your child reads.  The signed reading log must be returned to school at the end of the month to qualify for the reading log incentives program.  When we are reading short stories from our reading book, the 20 minute nightly reading will count towards the reading log.

 Technology

Keyboarding is a component of the fourth grade technology curriculum. Students are expected to know the location of the letters and punctuation marks. As this skill develops, the students should focus on the monitor and concentrate on keeping their fingers on the home keys. Fourth grade students also learn how to use Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Encarta and teacher approved websites on the Internet.

Book Reports

Every month the children will explore a different genre and have a book project. The project and requirements will be sent home at the beginning of the month.  This is a great way for children to be exposed to a variety of books and to enhance reading for meaning as well as enjoyment!

Snack

Included in our morning schedule will be a brief snack period.  It is recommended that a healthy snack is brought to school.  Suggested snacks include fruits, cheese and crackers, pretzels, veggies, granola bars or yogurt.   Unhealthy treats such as chips or candy will not be allowed.

Birthday Treats

 Birthday treats are welcome and appreciated for the class to enjoy.  Instead of bringing in an edible birthday treat children can donate an item for the class to share during indoor or outdoor recess.  Such items could be a favorite board game, math games, flashcards, puzzles, balls or jump ropes.
