Lunch:
Third graders have lunch everyday at 11:45-12:25 (includes recess).  Your child can purchase a “hot lunch” or bring a lunch from home.  Every month you will receive a calendar listing the lunch choices for each day.  Students can choose between two different lunch choices, cheese pizza, or salad bar.

A hot lunch with milk can be purchased for $2.30.  Milk only is $0.30.  Money for tokens should be turned in when needed in an envelope with your child's name on the front and labeled “lunch token money”.  Multiple tokens may be purchased with checks payable to Palos School District 118.

Expectations:
We follow the school-wide expectations to be Honest, Respectful, and Responsible. I award character coupons to students who are following these expectations.  Character Coupons are a part of our school-wide behavior incentive program.  These coupons are filled out by the student and placed in a drawing to win various rewards such as extra recess, lunch with the principal, etc.

When a student is choosing an inappropriate behavior they will be given a verbal warning.  For the second offense the student will fill out a Think Sheet during recess that will be sent home.  Please review the sheet with your child, sign it, and return to school.  The third offense requires a referral to the office where appropriate action will then be taken.

Take-Home Folders:
Each night your child will bring home a Take-Home Folder.  Please look through the contents of the folder and empty it daily.  This folder will contain important information, hand-outs, notes, completed assignments, and homework.  Every month it will contain our class newsletter that highlights the previous month’s activities and curricular information.  Upcoming important dates will be included as well.

Homework:
Students will be recording their daily homework in their assignment notebook.  The students are responsible for writing down their assignments and reminders for the next day.

Third graders are expected to read at least 5 nights a week for at least 20 minutes.  At the beginning of the week your child will bring home a spelling packet that is to be turned in by that Friday.  In addition your child will have 1-2 pages of math homework each night. Occasionally, your child will have Science/Social Studies assignments or projects that are to be completed at home.

Homework is checked for completion.  It is not graded.  Homework is an extension and enrichment of what we are learning in the classroom.

Consequences for missing homework

Each student is given 3 “Oops I Forgot My Homework” passes each Quarter.  If a student fails to turn in their homework for whatever reason they simply take a homework pass home as a reminder to turn the missing assignment in the next day.  If a student continues to fail to bring in their homework they will complete the assignment during their morning recess.

After 3 passes have been used in a quarter, an Assignment Alert will go home that is to be filled out by the student, signed by a parent, and turned in the next day with the completed assignment.

Reading Logs:
Reading Logs will be sent home monthly.  It will be the student’s responsibility to keep their log in a safe location, fill it out nightly, and have it signed and returned to school by the designated date.  Should it be misplaced…extras are always available.  I will also accept a “home-made” version.  J

Your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes 5 -7 nights a week.  Students will earn a bookmark and character coupon for turning in completed Reading Logs each month.  In addition, one student per class is randomly drawn to receive a credit towards spending money at the annual Book Fair.  Students who complete and turn in Reading Logs every month will participate in an end of the year ice cream party.  Happy Reading!

Scholastic Book Order:
Every month your child will bring home a Scholastic Book Order Form.  This is a great way to find “just right” reading books for your child at an inexpensive price.  Almost every month there are books to purchase for less than $1.00.  For every book you purchase your child’s teacher earns bonus points to purchase books for our classroom library.

If you would like to order books, please fill out the form completely and send either exact cash or check payable to: SCHOLASTIC BOOKS.

Birthdays:
Your child is welcome to bring a small treat on his or her birthday.  Please consider sending a nutritious treat or a non-food item such as pencils, bookmarks, or stickers.  If your child celebrates a summer birthday, feel free to send in a birthday treat on their half birthday.  We have 21 students.

Thank you so much for your cooperation this year.  Please feel free to contact me through notes, email (jzimny@palos118.org), or the school office (448-1084).  I am looking forward to a great year!
