Welcome to the Third
Grade Web Page!
Third grade is an exciting year! In this transition
from the primary grades to the intermediate grades the children will experience
many new, rewarding, and exciting things. Here is a general overview of
some of the things your child will be learning this all important year:
SCIENCE
We will cover four areas of study this year.
They include SPACE, STATES OF MATTER, SOUND, AND ENDANGERED ANIMALS.
These
areas of study will include research, experiments, and recording data.
The children will be learning to follow the scientific method. They will
learn to ask a question, make a prediction, observe an experiment, and
draw conclusions about the results.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will cover studies on CHICAGO and U.S.
HISTORY, GOVERNMENT, AND MAP AND GLOBE SKILLS.
We will incorporate
non-fiction literature and expository writing into these units.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Reading units will include reading of
biographies, tall tales, multi-cultural literature, fiction, and poetry.
The Writing portion of language arts will
include learning to write persuasive, narrative, and expository essays.
Poetry writing will also be incorporated into our writing curriculum.
Spelling units will include a CORE list
of words. The children are expected to spell these words correctly in all
their written assignments. Our spelling curriculum also includes a text
which provides a scope and sequence of phonetic skills.
MATH
Math studies in third grade include: the review
of basic addition and subtraction strategies, geometry, place value,
adding and subtracting of two and three digit numbers, time and money,
multiplication, and division.
