Procedures

Classroom Rules

Follow directions.

Listen when others are talking.

Work and play in a safe manner.

Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Work quietly and don’t disturb others.

Show respect for school and personal property.

If the students are doing an exceptionally good job of

following the rules, they may earn a marble.

They can also earn a marble if another teacher

compliments their behavior. After earning 20 marbles,

the students are allowed 15 minutes of free-time,

as chosen by the class.

Newsletter

I send home a newsletter every other Friday. The newsletter

contains information about what we are currently

learning about and what we will be learning

about in the near future. It also contains important

dates and upcoming school activities.

Reading Logs

The students will get a blank reading log every Monday.

Please fill out the log and return it to me the following

Monday (or Tuesday if there isn’t school on Monday).

The log needs to be signed and dated by the parent(s).

Students will earn a character coupon

if they read for at least 20 minutes

for 5-7 days a week for a month at a time.

Also, one student per class gets

randomly drawn (each month)

to get a free book from the book fair.

After the book fair, one student per class

will receive a gift card to Borders.

Book Orders

I will send home a book order form at least once

a month. Participation is completely voluntary.

If you would like to order books for your child,

please return the order form by the indicated date

and enclose a check (made out to Scholastic)

for the exact amount of the purchase.

Birthdays

You are welcome to help celebrate your child’s

birthday by bringing in treats on his/her birthday.

Please try to share healthy or inedible treats

such as stickers or pencils.  If the

birthday falls over the summer, the child may choose

a time near the end of the year or his/her half birthday

to celebrate. Please let me know when you are planning

on bringing a treat, so that I can plan a time to celebrate.

We have 22 students this year.

Lunch

Lunch tokens cost $2.30 and milk costs $0.30.

Multiple tokens may be purchased

with checks payable to Palos School District 118.

Homework

The homework that I assign is an extension of what

the students are learning in class. It is important that

every student complete every assignment on time.

You can expect there to be almost nightly homework in

reading, math, and spelling. There may be additional

assignments in writing, science, and social studies.

Please remember to check your child’s assignment

notebook and home folder for homework or study guides.

It is also important for your student to have

 a designated, quiet area to

study, read, and complete homework.

This area should have proper lighting,

work surface (desk, table, etc.)

and supplies (pencil, lined paper, erasers, etc.).

Also, try to establish a specific time to complete

homework, for example right after school or dinner.

This will limit ambiguity and procrastination

because your child will be clear on the

expectations during that time slot.

If homework is not completed on time,

the student will fill out a Late Homework Notice.

The notice will be signed by the student, teacher,

and parent. The notice should be returned

the next day with the completed assignment.

In addition, the student will spend at least 1 recess

period with the teacher on the day that the

 assignment was due.
