Homework Homework is an extension of what we are doing in the classroom. It will be assigned each day, with the exception of Fridays and holidays. Your child is responsible to keep track of homework in an assignment notebook. Each day the assignments will be posted on the board. Homework can be in Reading, Spelling, Math, and Writing. Science and Social Studies homework will consist of long term projects and studying for quizzes and tests, and an occasional in-class extension.
Reading Logs Each month your child will receive a reading log. Students in Room 10 are expected to read at least 5 days a week. The amount of time they read and the number of pages should be recorded on their reading logs nightly. These are due back to school, with a parent signature, the first school-day of each month.
Writer’s Notebooks In room 10, every child decorates a “Writer’s Notebook.” Many of our writing pieces will begin in this notebook. It is a very special place for the students to gather ideas and observations of the world around them. It is also a place to write important moments and memories. Entries in your child’s notebook are not expected to be more than short pieces of writing. These entries are just the “starting point” for the stories and paragraphs we will be working on throughout the year. It is also important to note that Writer’s Notebooks are not graded on the mechanics of writing. I will not be looking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Each night your child will have a writing assignment to complete in this notebook. Most will be short -requiring 5 or 10 minutes. We will be writing each and every day in our Writer’s Notebooks here at school. Please help your child to be responsible. Remind them that the notebook goes back and forth from school to home each night!
Lunch
Scholastic Book Orders Each month, attached to your newsletter you will also receive Scholastic book orders. If you would like to order books for your child, please return the order form by the indicated date and enclose a check made out to Scholastic for the exact amount of the purchase. If you are ordering from more than one form, please write 1 check for the total amount. Scholastic does not accept cash. Birthdays Birthday treats are welcome to celebrate your child’s birthday! If your child’s birthday falls over the summer months we can celebrate on any day. Just let me know in advance when the treats will arrive. This year we have 22 students in Room 10! Please note that due to allergies, all treats must be pre-packaged (not home-baked) and cannot contain peanut, dairy, or wheat products. Thank you for helping keep all of Room 10 safe.
