Welcome to Mrs. Tiernan's
Second Grade!
Here
are the answers to all the little questions about
Room
7's classroom schedules and procedures.
"Take Home" Folders
In your child's book bag, there is a "Take Home"
folder. Please look through and empty it daily, as it contains daily
handouts/notes, a weekly Homework Sheet, Spelling Packet, and Reading Log.
On some Fridays, it will contain the "Room 7 Newsletter," which keeps you updated on
our classroom activities over the past week and will inform you of upcoming
events. It will also have a “Completed Papers Packet,” which will contain
samples of your child's daily work and weekly assessments. Both the Room 7 Newsletter and “Completed Papers Packet”
have cover pages which should be signed and returned to school on Monday
morning. Please only return the cover pages, the attachments are
yours to keep. Depending on your child's performance on weekly assessments,
there might be spelling and/or math practice, which must also be signed
and returned on Monday.
HOMEWORK
Palos East Homework Policy (for the second
grade):
-Independent Reading 15 min/night /5 times
a week (MINIMUM!)
with nightly "Reading Log" entries
-Spelling (Monday through Thursday)
-Math Facts (Monday through Thursday)
-Additional Assignments 2-3 times/week (Language
Arts/Math)
Homework Sheet/Math
Facts Packet
Each week, your child will be given a dated
homework sheet. It will list all the assignments that need to be
completed at home. This sheet should be kept in (and returned to)
the take home folder at all times. Weekly Math facts will be attached
to the homework sheet. One page should be completed each night.
Students will be given a timed test on the facts on Friday. Please
be sure that both the folder and homework packet are returned to school
each day.
*I ask that you do the following each
night to ensure that assigned homework is completed:
1. Ask to see your child's homework
sheet.
2. Read the nightly assignment(s).
3. Provide assistance to your child
when necessary.
4. Check to see that assignment(s) are completed
and returned to the take-home folder.
5. Ask your child for any notes brought home
in take-home folders.
6. Return take-home folder to school bag.
Assignment Alert!
If an assignment is not turned in on time
and no other arrangement has been made, the student will stay in for recess
to complete an "Assignment Alert" form and any missing work. The
"Assignment Alert" is used to let you know what assignment(s) is/are missing.
It should be signed and returned to school the next day. If for some
reason your child cannot complete an assignment, and you are aware of this
(i.e. felt sick, stayed at grandma's house too long), simply write me a
note. Then, your child will not have to fill out an assignment alert.
Reading at
Home/Reading Logs
*Unless otherwise noted, EACH NIGHT, your
child is required to:
1. read for (at least) 15 minutes (M-TH) and
2 out of 3 nights on the weekend).
2. record the title(s) of the book(s) and
number of minutes read on their "Reading Log" (found in the take home folder)
3. return the "Reading Log" to the take
home folder,
4. return the take home folder (with log) and
the book(s) read (if borrowed) to their book bag
*READING LOGS SHOULD BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL
ON MONDAY MORNING with a parent signature and the number of minutes totaled.

with your child's name on the front.
Birthdays
Your child is welcome to bring in a healthy treat to share
with the class (we currently have 18 students) on his/her birthday.
Some families prefer to donate a book to the classroom library in honor
of a child's special day. He or she is welcome to read/share the
book on the day we celebrate. Both choices are optional. Summer
birthdays are celebrated towards the end of the school year, or if you
like, you can celebrate your child's "Half-Birthday."
