TO MRS. ROENITZ’S

KINDERGARTEN CLASS!

Hello!  My name is Meg Roenitz, and I am so excited to be part of the Kindergarten Team at Palos East.  As your child explores the colorful world of Kindergarten, I hope to make his/her experience successful, meaningful, and fun.

First, let me tell you about myself.  This is my second year teaching at Palos East.  It is wonderful to return to familiar surroundings, since I attended Palos East as a Kindergartener myself and grew up in Palos Hills.  The rest of my elementary school years were spent in parochial school, and I am a graduate of Stagg High School.  This will be my fifth year teaching Kindergarten, having taught this grade level in Oakbrook, Illinois, and also in Duluth, Georgia, which is in the suburban Atlanta area.  My teaching experience also includes four years teaching at the Second Grade level in Worth, Illinois.  I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University and a Master of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education from Governors State University.  I am married and have two daughters, ages 9 and 6 years.

Here is some important information that you will need to know in order to make your child’s Kindergarten experience a positive one.

Arrival Time

Class time for the AM session is 9:15 to 11:45.  Buses will drop off students at the door located outside the Kindergarten classrooms.  Car riders may be dropped off at the main entrance.  At dismissal, students will leave the building using the same doors as their arrival.  Bus riders will use the Kindergarten doors and car riders/daycare buses will use the main entrance.

Snack

Snack time is an important part of the Kindergarten day.  Each child will bring his/her own healthy snack each day.  Please see the list below for healthy snack ideas.  Milk is provided daily.  If your child does not drink milk, then you can send in a water bottle (no juice boxes or sports drinks).  The water will be thrown away after snack time.  Below are some healthy snack suggestions.

fruit or vegetables

cheese/crackers

peanut butter/crackers

granola bars

popcorn

muffins

The following snacks are not acceptable and will be sent home:

cookies

candy

brownies

donuts

Transportation

If you have any changes in your child’s transportation from school, you must send me a note stating how he/she will be going home.

Recess

Your child will be going outside for recess each day (weather permitting).  Please dress your child appropriately.

Take Home Folders

The “Take Home Folder” is to be used as a means of communication between home and school.  Please look in the folder daily and remove all papers.  If you need any correspondence to school, please place it in your child’s folder.

Cardinal Couriers

A group of important school and community information will be sent home with your child every Friday.

Library and Computers

The students will be going to the library once a week.  Each student will be able to check out a book from the library.  All books are due back after one week.  If there is no school on the day a library book is due, it should be returned to school the following day.  Please see the specials schedule below to see on what day our class will visit the library and computer lab.  After students check out books, they will then visit the computer lab.  There they will use student applications that will allow them to practice language arts and math skills.

Physical Education

The students will go to P.E. class once a week for forty minutes.  If you would like to have your child keep a pair of gym shoes at school, you may send a pair.  Otherwise, please make sure that he/she wears gym shoes on our assigned P.E. day.  Please see the specials schedule below to see when P.E. is scheduled for our class.

Homework

A homework grid and writing practice will be sent home each Monday in your child’s Homework Folder.  Your child is to select two activities to complete from the homework grid along with the accompanying writing practice.  Completed homework is to be placed inside your child’s Homework Folder and returned on Friday of the same week.  Please have your child bring his/her Homework Folder on Fridays only.

Reading Logs

Your child will receive a monthly reading calendar beginning in October.  The children are expected to be read to every school night for 10 minutes.  This monthly reading log is to be filled out on a daily basis and kept in your child’s Take Home Folder.

Newsletters

Your child will bring home a classroom newsletter at the end of each week.  Please take time to read it as it will contain important classroom information and upcoming events.

Birthdays

The children may bring in a special birthday snack on their birthday.  There are 19 children in our class.  All summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school year.

Volunteers

If you would like to help out in the classroom, please sign up during our Open House or contact me.

Vacations

Please let me know in advance of any scheduled vacation so I can notify the office.  When your child returns, he/she will receive any missed class work.

Scholastic Book Orders

Book orders will be sent home approximately every other month.  If you are interested in ordering books, please place the completed order form (including your child’s name) and payment (a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs) in an envelope marked “Book Order” and with your child’s name.  Order forms and payment need to be turned in by the due date indicated on the form.
