Reading

*Fifth grade uses the Harcourt Trophies series to expose the students to the following genres:

• historical fiction
• fantasy
• adventure
• biographies
• plays
• nonfiction
• realistic fiction
• poetry
• narrative fiction

*Many strategies and skills are incorporated into the fifth grade reading program.  Some of these skills and strategies are:

• increasing vocabulary
• decoding words using context clues to construct meaning
• utilizing resources including glossaries, dictionaries, and thesaurus
• setting a purpose for reading
• identifying main idea and supporting details
• drawing conclusions and making predictions
• sequencing story order and events
• summarizing and making generalizations
• using tables, maps, charts, and electronic text to improve comprehension
• identifying characters, setting, plot, conflict, climax, foreshadowing, bias, point of view, theme, resolution, and techniques
