**Classroom Information**

Specials – We have specials every day from 10:25-11:05.

Monday-PE, Tuesday-Music/Band, Wednesday-Art, Thursday-PE, Friday-PE

Please make sure your child wears sneakers on days that they have PE.

Library

We go to the school library every other Thursday.  Please make sure library books are returned on time so new books can be checked out.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a regular basis and some of these may be math review sheets, Spelling packets, Social Studies, Science, Genre Project, and other research projects.

  • I usually do not give homework on Friday.
  • Missing homework notices will be sent home if homework is not turned in.  Students are required to turn in the notice the next day.
  • Fifth grade has an incentive program to motivate students to complete their homework on time.  Students with 3 or more missing assignments will have to report to study hall, while others are engaged in a variety of fun activities.
  • Duration of homework should not exceed 50-75 minutes per night.  Independent reading of 20 minutes per night is in addition to assigned homework.

Assignment Notebook

Every day students will be responsible for writing their assignments in their Assignment Notebooks.  Each night, you should review your child’s completed homework and sign-off in their Assignment Notebook.  You may also send communication to me through the comments section – and I may send you notes as well.  Only sign-off when they have finished their homework and do not sign-off for the whole week at one time.

Grading

The grading scale is posted in the classroom.

  • 90-100 = A
  •  80-90 = B
  •  70-80 = C
  •  60-70 = D
  •  Below 60 = Yikes!

Take Home Folders

Your child will be bringing home important information in their folders every day.  Please be sure to review all work brought home with your child and discuss it with them.  These folders are to be returned every day with completed homework.

Friday Folders

On most Fridays, I will send home graded work for you to review.  Please make sure you review this work with your child and sign off on the sign-off sheet in the folder.

Birthday Treats

If you choose to send a treat with your child, please make sure that the treat does not contain peanuts or a peanut derivative.  Many of our Palos East students have severe allergies to peanuts.  Keep simple, healthy, and wrapped if possible.  We have 22 students.

Field Trips

  • Rendezvous with a Comet
  • Naper Settlement
  • Robert Crown Drug Awareness

Discipline

We have worked on putting together a set of classroom rules as a group.  The rules stress having good character and being a role model for the younger children at school.  If a student does not follow these rules, they will be given two warnings.  If the behavior continues, a Behavior Log will be sent home for you to sign.  For more serious offenses, we may call home together or the student will be sent to the main office.

Star Student

Each week, a student will be our Star Student.  I will send home a form with some questions for them to fill out.  They can also bring in some pictures to share with the class.  At the end of the week, the class will write a letter to the Star Student.

Sending Money

Please place all money that will be sent with your child in a labeled envelope or plastic baggie.  Be sure to include a note that has your child’s name (and number), what it is for, my name “Mr. Pritchard”, and grade level.

Your child’s progress this year is very important to me.  I am looking forward to a very exciting and successful year!

Please call if you have any questions or concerns.
