Women’s Rights Today
* * *
 Today, feminist organizations still protest and speak out for equal rights. Women have way more rights than ever before, and are closing in on men in terms of people in the workplace. However, statistics show that although women make up 35-40% of the workforce, only about 10% of all management positions go to them. So, there are still reasons for protest, obviously.

 Now, it’s not at all strange to hear about a single woman supporting herself and doing very well, but a few decades ago, it would’ve been a shock. We see more women working and more men staying home with the kids, and hear about more women in political positions. That just goes to show how much has changed over the years... but there are still men (and women!) who think that a woman’s place is in the home.

 Just because there are laws passed, and rights given, it doesn’t mean that they’ll be followed. Men still may choose to discriminate against women by declining to hire them... for no reason other than their gender. A woman might be far more competent and skilled at a career than a man, but he will be chosen above her. And if the woman does get hired, chances are she’ll get paid half of what a man does for doing the same job. So you see, this is why feminists still speak out and want more equality. In fact, NOW, an organization that was very active in the 60's, still protests today. They protest not only for women's rights, but for the rights of other groups, also.

 Lately, even more than equality, a topic of protest for women is Reproductive Rights. Reproductive Rights relate to birth control, abortion, and the like. This, being a new focus point, is a controversial subject that tends to be seen from many different views depending on the person. This kind of protest is practiced even more in other countries, where women are abused more, but it’s still here in the US. You might see people protesting for Pro-life or Pro-choice on the side of the road, at concerts, or even directly outside medical centers.

 Just like any other protest group, Women’s Libbers have won some of their battles, and they’ve lost some. But they don’t give up- they won’t stop until they gain the equal rights they deserve, and have been deprived of for too long.
