The Book of Kells
By:Angela and Therese

The Book of Kells was made around the year 800 a.d in the 8th cent.  It is the work of a team of Irish Monks at the Scriptorium of Iona about 1,200 years ago.  It took 30 years to complete the whole Book.  This book originated at Iona in Scotland and completed at the Irish monastery of Kells.  The eminent scribe Connachtach and the Abbot of Iona are said to have started the book of Kells.  The Book of Kells is a copy of the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.  The whole book is written in Latin.

The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript, known for the beautiful arrcy of pictures, interlaced shapes and ornamental details.  This book was drawn and written on vellum.  In the year 1006 the Book of Kells was stolen, on account of its wrought shrine.  A couple months later it was found, under a sod, with all of its gold stolen.  Because of this, all of the leaves in the beginning and end are missing.  To this day the book has 340 leaves.  It was probably intended to be an alter book because of its large size.
